Travel Sites Can Make Money in Social Networking
7 December 2006When I think about Web 2.0, I think Myspace, Facebook, Frappr, Flickr, and many other wannabes, hasbeens, and neverwillbes. Many of these sites have space for advertsing based on conent- which is a small money maker - but what about using the relationships themselves to make a buck?
There is a unique opportunity for the likes of Travelocity, Expedia, Hotwire and Orbitz to enable social networks to physically meet eachother. What better way to sell travel services than between two people that would like to visit eachother?
Imagine VISIT ME! buttons on MySpace webpages, or BETTER: how about flight costs automatically calculated between social networking site users that calculates plane flights based on ZIP code and local airport distances?
Being that I am not a travel genius, I am not jumping into social frey that makes up this side of Web 2.0. Someone with the right ins with a travel site, travel broker, and social networking groups might have a real go at this. OR this may be as simple as creating web widgets that users can add to their website.
